Our
belief system plays a crucial role in the molding of our personality as well as
it will define the kind of road we will traverse. Either it will be a very
smooth sailing travel in the course of our life or it can also be an exciting journey full of thrill and
enthusiasm to a road less travelled or the usual
way wherein everybody just passed
by.
An inborn child’s mind as John Locke believe, is a blank slate. Day by day, it gradually accumulates information and knowledge about the world as the infant becomes in touch with the essence of his existence. It is in the accumulation of day to day experiences that the “molding” of our belief system commence. Our exposure to varied stimulus in our immediate environment including our homes with the significant people slowly adds an ounce on the development of certain beliefs.
Thus, such beliefs might be anchored on a lot of factors the individual is exposed to. The kind of family relationships, the practices and norms we uphold defines our family culture depending on the kind of society we are intertwined. Which in effect might directly and indirectly affect the formations of our beliefs in varied “ shapes” as well as “forms”.
The beliefs that you hold dearly in your mind, becomes the guiding principle as to how you live your day to day life. In this regard, your beliefs are something that you uphold and perceive to be as true, significant and valuable to you. It might range from your personal philosophy in life, in all the things that you perceive to be the right thing to do. In essence, there might be a lot of factors which contributes to how such belief in something, in someone or in an idea or concept, or a theory or state of life is being developed and deeply grounded in the persons’ emotional, psychological, intellectual, social, spiritual and physical aspects.
The mind has the power to limit your capacity and it has also the power to spark your passion to achieve beyond the power of your imagination. Like what cognitive psychologists strongly upholds, our body has the power to realize whatever the mind can conceive.
Aaron Beck, a well-known proponent of the Cognitive Behavior Therapy, stressed the importance of “ belief systems” and “ thinking “ in determining behaviour and feeling. Anchored on such concept and perspective, we cannot deny the role of individual’s view of themselves and their personal worlds as being central to their behavioural reactions. Our thinking is basically at the central stage when we talk about what one basically adheres to.
The individual perception of what goes on in his immediate environment through the power of his thoughts, will in effect be reflected with the way he will respond. As the famous , the Secret and the Law of Attraction proponents adheres that, we attract positive energies as we open our mind to the rich possibilities and capacities. It is in the individual’s disposal, if he will be able to realize his dreams and goals in his lifetime. The mind has the power to achieve what it conceives of and it has also the power to limit if that is what the individual believe to happen. The way the person perceives it will come into reality.
There is power in our thoughts. As a practicing educational psychologists, my mind was shaped to think, to go beyond what I can feel, beyond the attitude and behaviour . To see the meaning and beauty of every experience as well as focus on the lessons that I can deduce from every event that comes my way. Without me realizing, I am able to give life to what my mind has set for myself - the creative aspect of my being as exemplified through my writing, talents, skills and competencies not only as a person but as a professional.
As a unique being, our dreams, wants, desires come in different shapes and forms depending on our “ own “ set of belief system. The moment that my mind became capable to synthesize what goes on within the core of my being as everyday unfolds, in touch with the specific age or stage of life I am passing through, the development or formation of my belief system commence.
What makes me happy, sad, lonely, fearful, anxious, excited, thrilled among other emotions is uniquely within me as I tend to sense, process and internalize cognitively every situation that I am confronted with. The power of my mind defines my needs, wants, dreams and my beliefs.
Whatever it is that motivates me to achieve, to dream, is something that is very personal and uniquely mine. Although in our socialization process, we were made to believe that we live and exists for others. It is also true that we find meaning in life as we touch other lives positively.
At the end of the line, we are the one’s accountable to whatever might happen in our lifetime. The measure or yardstick of success is dependent on how the person defines success. We are the master of our life, our Creator has given us the freewill to be what we want to become and to make our life on Earth meaningful as well as significant. We are the ones who uniquely formulated the “ ceiling “ to the essence of our being and our existence.
In reality, man has an insatiable nature, what satisfies one might not satisfy the other. Our needs, wants and desires are the product of how our minds are “uniquely wired”. It is in this wiring that makes the significant difference. There are times that we need to be content with what we have, with who we are and where we are, but the fact that our emotions are fleeting, which is completely controlled by the processing of our mind, we sometimes fail to see the beauty of everything that is happening to us and we tend to “ crave” for more, with what we “ still “ do not have.
Sometimes, we tend to use the “ yardstick “ of others in assessing our own life. Which in effect at the end of the day, we might even feel bitter and vain, because we are and will always be the lesser or weaker person compared to others.
The mind has the power to make and break us, depending on the way our inner self desires and permits it to be. There are times that our “ distorted beliefs” which we ourselves have formulated, creates a big role in the way we live our lives. Individuals’ perceptions are often distorted and dysfunctional when they are distressed. Similarly, the individual has the power to solve his real-life problems and he can in one way or another modify his distorted thinking as well as his dysfunctional behaviour and its distressing effect through the power of his thoughts. It all started in the mind, and it is also the mind which can find solutions to such occurrences.
At the end of the day, in every life experience, the key is in changing the way we think, and trying to make amends with the power of our minds for our good and for the benefit of others. Our creative and unique self has the right to put a ceiling to our needs, wants, dreams, and the only yardstick which we can use to gauge is our own uniquely formatted belief systems as well as our own definition of success.
